Movies that are hardly uplifting...

I came home from work at lunch time today and ended up watching a movie with H this afternoon. We've had some NetFlix DVDs sitting here, so we watched There Will be Blood. I enjoyed it, but H never likes movies where the main character isn't likable. Last week, we watched No Country for Old Men, too. I liked that one too, but what a terrible ending! H is ready to revoke my license to pick movies, because they were both so depressing. I had picked them because I knew they were both nominated for Best Picture and I usually like the Coen Brothers. I didn't know much about There Will be Blood, but that Daniel Day-Lewis was in it. I still have Juno sitting here and H already said he didn't want to see it, and I'm not sure I'm ready to watch a pregnancy-oriented movie right now, either. Have you seen TWbB or NCfOM? What were your impressions?

I haven't seen either of those movies, but a couple of weeks ago, Mrs. Jogger and I farmed the Little Joggers out to friends so that we could have a romantic evening together, and we rented Atonement. It's a good movie, but, man, what a downer! Definitely not designed to put you in the mood.

We just saw No Country a week or two ago. I had the basic gist of the movie beforehand, but I wasn't prepared for how stressed I was going to be throughout the entire movie. Definitely not relaxing.

We have TWBB right now and may watch it this weekend.

I'm avoiding both of them.

Jogger: We watched that day after my miscarriage! I bawled my eyes out at the end. It was so sad!!

Dr. Four Eyes: I know- I was freaking out for the entire movie- I just wish the ending had more closure (like Fargo)!

Anastasia: I don't blame you! I can't handle a lot of gore and anything with torture is out for me. They weren't too terrible in that respect- especially compared to some movies out there! I only covered my eyes once during TWbB.

Another downer we watched recently: The Painted Veil. SAD!

I loooooved TWBB! Daniel Day Lewis was just amazing to watch. It was filmed near where I do my research so that area is very special to me. The whole film was beautiful...creepy but beautiful!

I saw The Painted Veil a few months ago, and I cried and cried.

Comebacknikki and I ended up watching Becoming Jane this afternoon, followed by the PBS Miss Austen Regrets. Beautiful and sad.

We watched both of them in the same weekend. The night after we saw No Country, I had a nightmare and woke us up in the middle of the night...screaming.

I liked both movies, but agree that Daniel Day Lewis was just amazing. He is a freaky good actor. It is especially impressive if you see him in an interview or something and he doesn't look or sound like that character at all.

I think I liked TWBB so much because although it was really slow moving and there wasn't a lot of "action" I found it really mesmerizing. Also once it was over I was surprised to see how long it had been. I think it is just a really well done movie all around.

Both of those movies were really really good - Daniel Day Lewis is awesome, but Javier Bardem did a really great job playing that psycho guy!

No words for Atonement - I think it is one of the most beautiful / sad movies I have ever seen...

Then again, I spent last night sighing with a friend as we watched Pride and Prejudice :)

Also - I watched Juno as my miscarriage was happening, and I have to say I was not relating one to the other at all... It is a really good / funny movie! It will probably make you laugh some :)
