36

That's my age now (check my profile!) I haven't yet reached an age where I dread birthdays or don't want to reveal my age to people, so I am not depressed about adding another number. Some things that make me feel old are:
  1. knowing that some of my current students were BORN the year I graduated from high school (class of '88)
  2. being called "ma'am" at the grocery store
  3. realizing that I've been driving a car for 20 years
Some things that make me feel young are:
  1. having a student guess my age is 25 (this actually happened last week!)
  2. being one of the youngest faculty members in my department
  3. being carded when buying alcohol (most recently I was carded ordering a beer at the San Diego airport)
  4. my adorable 6-year-old daughter (she's very excited about my birthday this year) photo will disappear later today GONE- sorry if you missed it!

She is sooooo cute!

And yes, I'm about your age and have gone through the same shock recently. My students guess my age at 30, though. Lucky you.

Happy Birthday!!! Emjoy your day.

Your daughter is beautiful!!!! She looks like my oldest niece when she was six! My niece is now 14 and could be a model. I have a feeling your daughter is going to break some hearts!!!!

Addy,

Happy Birthday! D is a cutie, all right.

A couple of years ago, when the medium Little Jogger was in preschool, his teacher had him answer some questions about his parents...What does your mom do with her free time? What do you like best about your dad? His answer to "How old is your dad?" was 30. I was 38 at the time, so I'm thinking, "Hey, that's cool." His answer to "How old is your mom?"...18. So we figured she must be my trophy wife.

I still like birthdays, and I'm in my 40's. I get called 'miss' in stores if the saleswomen (always women) notice that I don't have a wedding ring (though I'm married), so the ma'am thing that you loathe might be related to the presence of wedding ring, rather than anything about your appearance. I have a love-hate relationship with looking younger than I am. Sometimes it's nice, but I also want to be taken seriously by my colleagues. I found out last year that my colleagues think I am substantially younger than a male colleague who is the exact same age that I am, and therefore not as ready for major responsibility as he is. That was annoying.

Hi FSP! I feel the same way about looking young, too. I am ALSO the youngest faculty member in my department, so I know what you mean about being taken less seriously (AND one of only two women). Thanks for visiting my blog!
