Either way, it's scary stuff.

Back to teaching

Yes, I am completely insane. Or maybe just greedy. I am the only untenured faculty member in my department teaching this summer. Since I have no research money to pay summer salary, I thought I should teach to earn some extra cash. My chair advised me against it, but here I am- the first day of class. The one advantage I see is that I usually function better (more efficiently) when I have a set schedule. If I have the entire day, I tend to put things off. No more trips... no more conferences... only one class (four days a week). We'll see if I can pull it off. I'll report in on my new students later...

For a friend in SLO-town

I thought I would join the Friday Cat Blogging this week. I don't even know if I have mentioned my cat on this blog. I got a letter from a good grad school friend today, who also loves cats (including mine). She mentioned that she has been 'lurking' on my blog, so I thought I would post this picture for her.My cat (let's call her scaredy lap cat, SLC) is almost 13 years old. She is very sweet and loves laps, but is SCARED of everyone and spends a lot of time in hiding. Poor, little, silly one. She's still recovering from our two-week absence.

Things to come...

Ah, yes- it's back to reality. The family vacation is over and I have to get REALLY busy now. I start teaching summer session on Monday, so I should have lots of fun student anecdotes and observations, which have been so far missing from this blog (since I started blogging at the end of last Fall and didn't teach last semester). I also need to revise and resubmit a paper, finish that paper I keep talking about, and just be an all-around productive person.

In the mean time, here are some photos from our last days of the trip. We started in Seattle and ended up in San Diego- we logged over 2100 miles in the rental car (about 200 less than last summer's trip.) The car got decent mileage (about 25 mpg), but we spent time searching for gas bargains- man, is gas expensive out west! It was pretty cool to see the way the landscape changed as we lost latitude... I loved it up north in the cool weather and conifers. I will definitely have to go back someday- despite my allergic reaction to Oregon!

You: "But, Addy- It's only a 3 hour time difference!"

Addy N.: "Yes, but our flight that was scheduled to arrive at 12:30 AM EDT was DELAYED. We landed at 1:45 AM, claimed our luggage, took the parking shuttle, loaded the car, put D into the car (she passed out as soon as we hit the interstate), drove the 110 miles to home. We arrived at 4:45AM and went to bed as it was getting light, and woke up around 11:00AM today"

You:"________________________" fill in the blank

It's going to be a fun couple of days getting adjusted... Did I mention that I start teaching summer session on Monday, too?

I'm clearly allergic to Oregon :(

No- I haven't been crying. It's all pollen, baby...

More pictures later- It's really gorgeous here:I didn't know any part of I-5 looked like this!

I can't possibly be the six-fingered man!

Wow- that's interesting. What does that say about me? Hmmm... I didn't think I was ruthless. (via APL)

We're in Oregon, now. Yesterday we were in Portland for the Rose Festival Parade. D and I watched that while H got lost in Powell's City of Books (what an awesome store that is!)

Here's Big Foot bathing down the parade route

I was told by some locals that all floats have to be decorated with natural materials (seeds, plants, flowers, etc.) There was another float with potatoes used as rocks. We also hit the Columbia Sportswear Store, where we discovered that Oregon has NO SALES TAX. More pictures later!

Wow, are things nuts around here!

We are leaving for the long-awaited Family Vacation tomorrow. This has coincided with a bunch of things, like summer research students arriving in town and needing quick tutorials on everything to keep them busy while we're away. I still haven't finished that stupid paper, either. I may actually bring it with me. My laptop will be with me anyway, so I guess the paper will be, too. I figure I can work a little in the morning, since I will probably wake up early for the first week!

I still have to pack for all of us, do some last-minute laundry, wash D's hair, do some more cleaning, write a note for the cat sitter, and finish up some things for the research students. At least we're not flying early- our flight is in the afternoon, but we don't arrive in the beautiful Pacific Northwest until LATE at night. With the time difference, D is sure to be slap-happy by the time we arrive. She's a great traveler, though- we've dragged her to so many conferences and other trips to visit family and friends and she's really good.

OK- back to organizing and everything.... I'll post from the road if I have time. If not- I'll post some pictures when I get back!

Cheers!

More HOT weather blogging

Seeking Solace had another meme over at her place:

How do you cope with hot weather? Two words: AIR CONDITIONING
When does the heat make you most crazy? When I've parked my car in the sun all day, it feels like an oven and it takes 20 minutes for the A/C to cool it off.
Your favorite hot weather music? Something loud and fun.
Where do you go to get air conditioning? My house, my car, my office, stores, etc.
Your favorite place to sleep in hot weather? My bed with the ceiling fan cranked up.
Your favorite hot weather food? Anything cold: salads, smoothies, etc.
Your favorite people to visit in the hot weather? I DON'T visit people without A/C.
Your favorite way to wear your hair in the hot weather? UP!
Your favorite hot weather drink? Anything cold: iced lattes, iced tea, WATER.
Your hot weather story? When I lived in Tucson, there was one really hot day (well, there were many). My friend and I were driving down Speedway Blvd. and knew that a bank with a thermometer was coming up, so we watched for the temperature. It was malfunctioning and reported a temperature of 155°F! We laughed our heads off, because it seemed like was 155°F!
Is hot weather good for anything? Reminding me why I no longer live in Tucson.

Well, it looks like relief is coming. Out forecast high for today is 78°F! Hallelujah! I was out in the woods with some students and colleagues yesterday and came back to the office drenched in sweat- we're going out again tomorrow, so the cooler weather will certainly be a nice change...
